A growing share of buyers now start their research inside an AI chat instead of a search bar. They ask a direct question and get a short list of named companies back. If yours is not one of them, you are not being ignored. You are simply not there yet, and that is fixable.
Run the test yourself, right now
Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overview and ask the question a real buyer would ask: "best [your category] for [your audience]." Ask it three or four different ways. Note who gets named, in what order, and what gets said about each company. That is your current visibility, measured instead of guessed at.
Why traditional SEO rankings do not predict this
Ranking first on Google for a keyword and getting cited in an AI answer are related but not the same thing. AI models pull from a mix of structured data, third-party mentions, review sites, and content that answers a question directly and completely. A page built purely to rank for a keyword, without actually answering the underlying question in full, tends to get skipped when a model decides who to cite.
What actually moves the needle
Clear, structured content that answers real questions completely, not a teaser paragraph and a form to fill out. Schema markup that tells machines what a page is about, beyond the words sitting on it. Genuine third-party mentions: reviews, comparison articles, forum answers, the kind of citation a model treats as evidence rather than marketing. All three compound. None of them work alone.
Track it like a channel, not a curiosity
Most marketing teams check this once, feel either good or bad about it, and move on. Treat it the way you would treat organic search: run the same test monthly, track who gets named and how the wording shifts, and treat a missing citation as a lead worth investigating, not background noise.
